An article on espn.com says that the New York Times is reporting that the UFC has been in talks with NBCUniversal and met with them Wednesday about purchasing a majority stake in the G4 channel. It is rumored that the UFC is looking to acquire 60 percent ownership in G4. UFC president Dana White has previously stated that the company is interested in owning a television network as well as bringing the UFC to network television, owning a controlling stake in G4 could very well accomplish both of those things.
On paper you’d think I’d be stoked, combining two of my passions mma and video games, but what would happen to G4′s current format? I’d like to have some reassurance that shows like Attack of the Show, X-Play, Ninja Warrior, and new shows like Proving Grounds and the new Marvel anime’s that they acquired the rights to would still be there. If those shows were spared and the rest of the day was focused on the UFC on G4 then I would be thrilled, but right now we just don’t know much and if this acquisition does happen in my mind it will either be very good or very bad. Gamers and sports fans alike feel free to discuss your thoughts.
Okay, I can understand this is could be a good marketing strategy for them tapping into a network where the demographic is young college kids. On the other hand, with all the documentaries and movies offered by G4; I don't think that will leave much room for dedicated gaming coverage, save for perhaps a small portion on Attack of the Show and Gaming Conventions.
See thats where I think potentially they could do both. I think the movies and random documentaries that have nothing to do with gaming could be cut out thus keeping all of the gaming/tech coverage as well as the really popular shows. Shows like cheaters and Campus PD have no purpose on G4 and I wouldn't mind seing them go.
I agree with Kenny. The shows Cheaters and Campus PD belong on a network like TruTV not G4. G4 should be about gaming, technology, other cool stuff. I think UFC buying out majority control would take G4 in a new direction that would work better for the station. I thought it was a shame when DirecTV dropped G4 from its lineup and if UFC moved Ultimate Fighter, and shows that break down older fights people who like watching that stuff will be a little upset. I work for Dish Network and I have the service and I am glad Dish has kept G4. I get to watch attack of the show even though they don't have Olivia Munn as the co-host anymore. I also like all the coverage they do on E3. I don't know anywhere else other than the internet to find coverage on E3. Hopefully this deal does go through!
